Phylogeny and Evolution of Chironomid Midges (Insecta: Diptera).
Dr. Jon Martin
Multidisciplinary investigation of phylogeny and evolution of chironomids, particularly the genus Chironomus, in collaboration with a number of co-workers in Australia and overseas.
Chironomids are of economic importance as fish food, indicators of pollution and reach pest proportions in some areas, particularly rice growing areas.
Our studies include karyosystematic, morphological and molecular genetic approaches. Areas of particular interest include gene mapping, the unusual sex determination system and the genes responsible for heavy metal tolerance.
